Association of Professional Archaeologists

Association of Professional Archaeologists (Ontario)

~  Student Bursary Awards  ~

$tudent Bursaries have arrived for APA's member$

University students struggle financially... we've all been there and, with the profession of archaeology not exactly being the most lucrative, many of us have been paying off student loans and debts well into our careers. APA is in a position to assist the next generation of CRM professionals and researchers, at least in a modest way.

Two Student Bursaries will be awarded once per academic year to two student members in the amount of $750 each.  Each bursary would be the approximate amount of tuition for 1 single-semester course.

“The APA Indigenous Post-Secondary Student Bursary” and “The APA Post-Secondary Student Bursary”

- next round: may be applied to the 2023-2024 fall/winter academic year or towards course tuition in the summer 2024 term; next Deadlines see below

- Value: $750

For more information or to submit your application materials, contact us at members@apaontario.ca

* A growing number of Professional members are choosing to donate to this fund, thereby directly supporting the students who are up-and-coming in our profession!  A heart-felt thank you to those who are supporting the Student Bursaries! *

** 2022-23 Recipient: Emily Anson **

This year’s recipient of the Student Bursary is Emily Anson, a Professional member who is pursuing a PhD in McMaster Anthropology supervised by Dr. Dawn Martin-Hill. Emily’s focus is on creating a framework for Indigenizing archaeology in Ontario through collaborative research and policy change. Emily’s MA focused on repatriation of archaeological artifacts at the UofT, completed an honours BA in archaeology and anthropology from Wilfrid Laurier University, and, as a teenager, graduated from the Boyd Archaeological Field School! Emily has worked in the CRM field since 2011 in a wide range of sites and projects across southern Ontario, and has served on the Hamilton Chapter OAS since 2016.  More recently, Emily has been working on the Ohneganos Haudenosaunee community health project and mapping of data for the Terrastories project. We are very pleased that Emily has agreed to provide an APA ‘Ask An Expert’ session entitled 'Decolonizing Ontario Archaeology' in July of 2023!

** 2018-19 Recipient: Josh Garrett **

APA member Josh Garrett is currently a graduate student at Trent University working with Dr. James Conolly, and has been awarded the 2018-19 Post-Secondary Student Bursary.  Josh's archaeological interests are broad, but the focus of his Masters' research is quantifying morphological and decorative variability in prehistoric ceramic vessels of the Middle and Late Woodland periods.  On the side, Josh is also compiling a lithics raw materials reference database involving a photo-guide demonstrating all the variability found within specific chert types (newly exposed and patinated characteristics), intended to be accessible to avocational archaeologists, professional archaeologists, and CRM employees.  Congratulations from APA to Josh, and good luck staying focused on each of your many pursuits!

** 2017-18 Recipient: Daniel LaPierre **
